Workshop FAQs

Workshops – metalworking, woodwork, ancient crafts, traditional skills.

Learn Something Old

At Butser Ancient Farm you can journey back in time with these inspiring workshops that provide a hands-on experience in a beautiful, atmospheric setting. There are workshops in blacksmithing, bronze casting, nettle uses, herbal medicine, woodworking, and many more crafts and skills.

Our workshop spaces are either in our houses – with real fires, earth floors, wooden benches and no windows, or in our three-sided, roofed tech pods.

Unless the description says otherwise the workshop runs from 10am to 4pm.

Please note there is no smoking on site. Please do not bring any pets with you.

What should I wear? Workshops will always run no matter the weather, so please dress appropriately. Bring layers with you. It can be either hot or cold at Butser Ancient Farm. Being an outdoor site we suggest sun cream and hat or woolly socks and Sou’Wester! Don’t wear your best outfit – it could get muddy/dusty. Flat suitable footwear (solid sole, no open toed shoes). If we work indoors there may be an earth floor and a real fire, and wooden benches to sit on.

What else should I bring? A cheery disposition!

Lunch? Your lunch is not included within this workshop. Please bring a picnic or packed lunch to enjoy outside or around the fire, depending on weather. There is nowhere local to buy lunch. Hot and cold drinks, ice cream, fudge, flapjack are available to buy in the shop but there is no cafe serving food at Butser Ancient Farm.

On the day. Meet at the visitor centre next to the free car park. I look forward to seeing you on the day but if there are any questions before hand please email the farm on volunteers@butserancientfarm.co.uk

Where to Stay. We recommend contacting the Sustainability Centre (01730 823166), a short drive away with alternative accommodation including a hostel, yurts and camping facilities. sustainability-centre.org
