Journey through time and discover how ancient explorers were the first astronomers! Explore ancient voyages and the night sky on our brand-new family trail and navigate from Stone Age homes to Saxon halls via the Bronze Age, Iron Age and our Roman Villa as you follow the clues in the night sky!

To celebrate the South Downs National Park Dark Skies Festival, we’re getting starry all week. Gather round our Standing Stone for talks on ancient astronomy, enjoy stories about the stars round the fire in our Great Roundhouse, and follow our all-new family trail on your adventures around the farm.

Discover astronomy from ancient star maps to modern solar scopes, plus metalworking demonstrations, hands-on activities, and more! (different activities are available on different days - see below for details)

What’s on

Please be aware that many of our half term activities are run by our wonderful volunteers and may be subject to change on the day.

Every day

Discover ancient explorers and the stars with our free children’s trail, get creative with hands-on crafts to make a willow star and create Bronze Age pendants, time-travel through 10,000 years with our ancient buildings, and more!

Special

  • Join us by the fire in a roundhouse for a performance of starry stories for all ages.

    Performances on Saturday 10th, Sunday 11th and Sunday 18th at 11am, 12:30pm, and 2pm

  • Gather round our standing stone for a talk on ancient astronomy, from Stonehenge to the pyramids.

    Talks every weekday at 11am

    Please note due to illness there will be no talk on Friday 16th

  • See ancient metalworking in action and discover the technology behind the world’s oldest star map — the 3,500-year-old Nebra Sky Disk.

    Monday 12th to Saturday 17th, with special talks at 2pm.

    Pleas note due to illness the metalworking will not be taking place on Friday 16th. Apologies for any inconvenience.

  • Discover the ancient night sky up close with this incredible planetarium experience in our Great Roundhouse. Led by skyscape archaeologist Dr Fabio Silvia, enter an inflatable planetarium and be surrounded by projections of the night sky as you learn more about what the sun, moon and stars meant to ancient societies.

    Saturday 17th only. Additional charge of £5 per person for a 45-minute immersive experience. Pre-booking advised, learn more here →

  • See bronze weapons and artefacts being made in our Hot Technology Workshop. Please note these are workshops open to viewing, and be respectful of the tutor and attendees.

REFUNDS: If we aren’t able to open the farm on the day of your visit, you will of course be completely refunded. Unfortunately in any other circumstances we aren’t able to offer refunds.

COVID-19: We’re still being careful, and will follow the government advice at the time. We’re a mostly-outdoors site, and encourage people to mask indoors if it makes them more comfortable. If you have any symptoms of COVID-19 or have been asked to self-isolate when you’re due to visit, please stay at home and take care of yourself.
