Tours are ideally suited to any group looking for something different and unique, such as university groups, historical societies, U3A groups, WI’s and other interest groups and can be adapted to suit any level of interest or knowledge.

What’s covered?

Our standard tour gives an overview of the five main time periods covered at Butser: Neolithic, Bronze Age, Iron Age, Roman and Anglo-Saxon and takes between 1 to 1.5 hours as we step through over 5000 years of history.

Guided by an expert team member you will learn about what life was like during these key periods, as well as about the lessons learnt during our experiments at the farm and stories about the construction and research carried out here at Butser. After exploring the different periods represented at the Farm we will return to the facilities at the visitor centre where refreshments are available to purchase, before having the opportunity to explore and revisit areas of the farm in your own time.

We are also able to offer the opportunity to accompany your lecture tour with a guided experimental archaeology activity such as spinning wool from our sheep, carving chalk lamps or making plant fibre cordage (additional cost applies).

Pricing

Private lecture tours during normal opening hours are charged at £20 per person (including site entrance and VAT). There is a minimum charge of £240, equivalent to the price for 12 people.

We offer free parking for coaches and minibuses and free entry for the group organiser. 

We are also able to offer exclusive private entry and tours of the farm outside of normal opening hours. Please contact us to discuss pricing and availability of this option.

Accessibility

Our tours are designed to provide opportunities for sitting and as far as possible will be tailored to your requirements, please discuss any special needs in advance of your visit. 

Butser has disabled facilities and disabled accessibility to all buildings and wheelchair loan is available from our visitor centre. Please contact us in advance if you require use of our wheelchair.
