Mosaic project at Butser Ancient Farm tesserae

As one of the key centres for experimental archaeology in the world, we are proud to continue to pioneer research and investigation in the field of experimental archaeology, continuing this tradition for coming up to 50 years.

We are a member of Exarc and work closely with both professional archaeological units and university departments, welcoming researchers to come and carry out research projects at the farm.

In 2019 we entered into an ongoing research partnership with University College London Institute of Archaeology, hosting their annual experimental archaeology course and collaborating on a range of research projects.

We also work with commercial archaeological units, most recently Wessex Archaeology on our 2019/20 Neolithic House project and Operation Nightingale on our 2021 Bronze Age Roundhouse build.

To find out more about our current and past research and experiments click here or visit www.butser.org.uk for an archive of the early work carried out at Butser.

We also welcome research proposals from students and academics, if you would like to propose a project please get in touch. We’d love to hear from you.
