Arrowsmithing Taster

Receive guidance from renowned Master Arrowsmith and Fletcher Will Sherman, as he introduces you and one other person to dip your toes into the beginnings of his craft during a 2-hour session. With his portable forge he will help each person to make 2 different arrowheads, based from historic originals, to take away at the end of their lesson - a Type 8 medieval bodkin, and a tanged Viking hunting head! (Restricted to those 18+)

Your ticket also includes a scheduled 1-hour slot of ‘have-a-go’ archery with our on-site instructor. With your own target and 22lb draw plastic snake bow, it’s always your turn.

Pair A - Forge 9.00-11.00 / Shoot 11.30-12.30

Pair B - Forge 11.30-13.30 / Shoot 14.00-15.00

Pair C - Forge 14.00-16.00 / Shoot 12.45-13.45

About the workshop

  • 3 different time slots to choose from, all with forging, archery and walking around our paths - perhaps enjoying a picnic.

  • Engage with an endangered craft that harks back to ancient times but has continued to play an important role throughout our country’s history

  • Make 2 arrowheads: a Type 8 medieval bodkin, and a tanged Viking hunting head!

  • Spend 1 hour of continuous shooting improving your aim

  • Set in the unique surroundings of Butser Ancient Farm’s historic buildings - enjoy a walk and a picnic

Will Sherman has spent many years gaining expertise as both a Master Arrowsmith, Blacksmith and Fletcher. He has produced incredibly authentic and accurate display items for museums across the UK and Europe, and has worked with some of the largest film production companies supplying historically accurate and fantasy arrows and heads.

Workshop Info

Please wear sensible clothing and footwear for this workshop. No trainers, open-toed or heeled shoes, bare legs, or very loose clothing please — we recommend sturdy shoes or boots. We reserve the right to cancel your ticket or limit your participation without refund if your clothing presents a safety risk.

Lunch is not included and you should bring a packed lunch. A small giftshop onsite sells snacks and hot/cold drinks to bolster this.

This workshop is intended for adults and is STRICTLY 18+
