FREE Heritage Crafts Taster Day for Local Residents

Thanks to generous support from East Hampshire District Council, residents from East Hampshire can secure FREE ENTRY for a unique day at Butser Ancient Farm - allowing these local families to have a go at Heritage Crafts and Ancient Skills themselves!

For all ages: Calligraphy, Coin Striking, Corn Dollies, Drop Spinning, Ancient Games, Pottery, Story Telling, Trollen Wheels, Wattling, Willow Stars.

For those 7+ Archery, Cordage Making, Dice Making, Fire Starting, Leather Embossing, Leather Keyrings, Rope Dragonflies, Slate Arrowheads, Sling Shooting.

Older limits apply: Arrowhead Forging*(18+), Flint Knapping*(18+ or 14+ w/adult), Hurdle Making* (18+), Maille Bracelets (10+), Tin Casting* (18+ or 16+ w/adult).

(20/24 activities are being offered with no charge, however the 4 activities marked with an asterisk must have time slots booked below for £2.50)

About the day

  • A chance for East Hampshire Families to get hands on with Heritage Crafts and Ancient Skills for FREE with 24 activities represented, including 5 endangered crafts with tutors coming together from around the country.

  • Bring a picnic or purchase delicious food from sibling vendors ‘The Cookhouse Streetfood’ whose food trailer will be selling various hot dishes.

  • Try ancient activities in ancient settings! Set in the unusual and evocative ancient building reconstructions of Butser Ancient Farm.

  • Book ahead - to efficiently fill limited places, the four (18+) activities listed below MUST BE BOOKED BEFOREHAND, although they can be watched on the day:

    Iron Arrowhead Forging / Tin Casting / Flint Knapping / Hurdle Making

  • Plan your time with us - with so many activities, both continuous and with timed slots, navigate your day with the handy map found below.


Important Information

Please wear sensible clothing and footwear, as well as paying attention to the dress requirements for any extra workshop(s) booked. We reserve the right to cancel your ticket or limit your participation without refund if your clothing presents a safety risk for these 4 bookable workshops. It is your responsibility to arrive before your time slot at the correct location in order to take part.

Lunch is not included - you are welcome to bring a picnic to enjoy in our beautiful grounds, otherwise food can be purchased from The Cookhouse Streetfood vendor and our small giftshop onsite which sells snacks and hot/cold drinks to bolster your energy levels.

All tutors and staff deserve to be treated with respect. Please be patient and considerate during this FREE ENTRY community day.

This Day is for EAST HAMPSHIRE RESIDENTS ONLY. Please make sure to book your place under an East Hampshire postcode.
