Explore Butser
What to do on a visit to our historic houses and gardens
Experience over 10,000 years of human history…
Step into the past, and visit a place where you can touch the thatch, smell the woodsmoke, and imagine yourself living in a time before the concept of England. Explore our ancient houses and gardens, meet our rare-breed sheep and goats, follow a free children’s trail, and get hands-on with ancient crafts! A great day out for the whole family, even the dog.
Things to do at Butser
Meet our rare sheep & goats
See our flock and their lambs grow through the seasons, and watch as their horns come in — did you know they can have up to six? Plus meet our endangered goats, including friendly baby Nutmeg!
Explore our ancient houses & gardens
Experience the past brought to life like never before, and see our experimental reconstructed houses in the flesh. Made with ancient tools and materials, this is the closest you’ll get to time travel!
Trails, talks, & more!
Our wonderful volunteers also often run additional activities, from living history demonstrations and talks to family storytelling and archaeology digging. Ask us what’s on today when you arrive, and remember to pick up your free children’s trail to explore the farm too!
Get hands-on with ancient crafts & skills
Get hands-on and learn an ancient skill in our free drop-in crafts workshops, suitable for all ages. Crafts include spinning, cordage, pottery, and chalk carving. Check the blackboard by the visitor centre when you arrive to see which two are on today!
