Butser on Film

Don’t I recognise that roundhouse?

Butser Ancient Farm is regularly used as a film set for a variety of documentaries and dramas. We are very experienced at working with film and TV crews, and proud of our extensive film credits.

See below for a small section of the programmes we have featured in. In recent years the farm has been a location for Horrible Histories: The Movie - Rotten Romans (2019), Sky TV’s Britannia (2019), the Smithsonian Channel’s Mystic Britain (2019) and BBC Horrible Histories (2022).

If you are interested in hiring the site for any sort of filming project, big or small, please get in touch at admin@butserancientfarm.co.uk to discuss your requirements. We can offer a range of locations spanning the Stone Age, Iron Age, Roman and Anglo-Saxon/Viking periods, plus ancient breed animals and crops. Our archaeological experts are available to demonstrate and discuss a range of ancient skills, daily life and building techniques. Our staff are also available to hire in a consultancy role for documentary and drama programmes and films.

We can also provide you with professional HD licensed B-roll stock footage of the farm, including drone shots and gimble video.

HORRIBLE HISTORIES: THE MOVIE - ROTTEN ROMANS was largely filmed at Butser Ancient Farm, with our Iron Age roundhouses and villas the setting for much fo the film.
