Capture a moment in nature to make a unique decoration for your home. Explore & enjoy making your own unique botanical relief roundel perfect to display in your home. Learn from an experienced local artist how to paint a plaster impression using a separate mini botanical cast to experiment and improve.

  • Begin the day by walking and foraging for natural materials around Butser Ancient Farm.

  • We will combine your foraged natural materials with fresh, seasonal flowers & foliage from a local flower farm; to create your botanical design and impression in clay.

  • Discover the skills and beautiful, slow process of creating your own 3D plaster relief.

About the workshop

  • Day workshop with a break for lunch - 11am - 3:00pm

  • Take home your personal 19cm Botanical Plaster Relief Roundel as well as a 6cm Mini Pre-made Plaster Roundel for practicing painting techniques and a small arrangement of tied flowers from the day

  • Reconnect with the natural world in a creative way, nestled in the unique surroundings of Butser Ancient Farm’s historic buildings

Josephine Butler is a botanical plaster relief artist inspired by the landscape & coastline of the south of England.  Rooted in slow process and sensory detail, her work captures nature in time.  The plaster relief has the ability to hold the fragility, strength, and quiet resilience of the natural world.  Inviting you to pause, look closely and reconnect with nature.

Included in your ticket

Entrance to the farm, a day’s tuition and expertise, and use of all the tools and materials necessary to paint a 6cm nature roundel and to cast your own 19cm plaster relief roundel. Also includes a small arrangement of tied flowers and foliage to remember the day.

Additional Information

Please wear sensible clothing and footwear for this workshop.

Please consider the safe transportation of your art home. The 19cm roundel will remain fragile until fully dry and hardened which can take up to a week. It is suggested that you bring a suitable small cardboard box and an apron with you if you can.

Lunch is not included, hot/cold drinks and snacks (subject to availability) can be purchased from our gift shop to shore up your packed lunch.

This workshop is suitable for ages 16+.
