Historical Plants Workshop

  • Butser Ancient Farm Chalton Lane Hampshire, PO8 0BG United Kingdom (map)

Have you ever wondered which plants the Romans introduced to the UK?

Did you know there’s a plant that will give a yellow dye from its flowers, but a red dye from its roots?

What common flower is good for a bilious attack?

Explore how plants through time have been used for food, flavourings, dye, medical treatments, strewing, and making protection amulets. Create an ancient remedy to take home, and tour the gardens with experienced tutor Sally Murdoch. Investigate recipes from Saxon Leechbooks and Tudor Herbals of Culpeper and Gerard.

Choose either a morning OR afternoon session and spend the rest of your day enjoying our unique site - included in your ticket price.

Please note the tutor is not a medical herbalist, the content of this workshop is not intended to be used for medical treatments.

Tickets £35

Sally Murdoch spent 4 years teaching Tudor skills, including the Apothecary, to school groups at the Weald and Downland Living Museum before taking ‘hands-on’ Tudor history into local schools. She was the resident Apothecary at Wymering Manor and designed and helped to plant their Physic garden. She has also published ‘Tudor Recipes for the Modern Cook’ to great reception.

For the last 25 years she has attended regular courses with the historical/medical herbalist Christina Stapeley, this year being no exception! She loves to work in her own garden, which is planted up with Lady’s Bedstraw and Balm of Gilead, Sneezewort and Myrtle.
