Saxon & Viking Festival
Saturday September 20th & Sunday September 21st 2025, 10:00am - 4:00pm || Butser Ancient Farm, Waterlooville, Hampshire
As the sun sets on the end of summer, join us to celebrate the autumn equinox with an immersive two-day, Viking-themed festival experience. Step into a world of valkyries, berserkers, Saxon warriors, live music, traditional crafts, and living history - all among the atmospheric surroundings of Butser Ancient Farm! This year’s Equinox weekend will be celebrated during the daytime, giving you time to explore and immerse yourselves in a world of Saxons, Vikings and ancient stories brought to life.
Butser Plus subscribers will be contacted with a link to the presale for Equinox tickets. Tickets for the general public sale will go live on August 5th at 12pm midday.
Viking battles, games and ritual…
Enjoy a performance of Beowulf by Viking reenactors on Saturday, or test your mettle and strength at Viking games on Sunday. As both days draws to a close, gather each afternoon with the Anglo-Saxons of Herigeas Hundas and Vikings of Wuffa to honour the end of summer, awaken the spirit of the new season and celebrate the Equinox. Bring your own drums and help awaken and name your instruments and join in with the war bands as we begin to build up to the final moments of the day.
Join the march of Saxons and Vikings to the rhythm of the drums where the Bear, the Boar, and the Wolf warriors step forward in their beastly skins. Join in a ritual of war cries and wild spear-dance to welcome in autumn.

What is the Equinox Viking Festival?
Butser Ancient Farm is a unique experimental archaeology site in Hampshire, and Equinox is one of our biggest fundraising events of the year. We’re an independent not-for-profit, and we absolutely rely on the support we get through Equinox to allow us to continue our research and educational work in the coming year.
The equinoxes mark the only two times in the year that day and night are equal length, halfway between the longest and shortest days. Ancient peoples have been observing the equinoxes and solstices since the Stone Age - this is what monuments like Stonehenge pay tribute to!
We don’t know if the Vikings themselves celebrated the autumn equinox, but some modern Norse pagans celebrate Haustblot around this time. Our festival isn’t intended as either a historical recreation or a religious celebration; instead, we honour the end of summer with a spectacular festival of activities, performances, and storytelling! We encourage you to bring to it whatever meaning you would like - historical, spiritual, communal, or just a bit of fun! This festival welcomes all comers.
