Learn an endangered craft deeply rooted to rural life, from one of the last remaining tutors in the South of England. Connected to the rhythms of the earth, corn dollies were also known as harvest tokens. Plait straw to create a range of corn dollies while you listen to their history. A soothing and relaxing activity, this workshop is beginner friendly.

Set in the unique surroundings of Butser Ancient Farm’s historic buildings
Sally Murdoch loves the craft for its relaxing properties. She teaches corn dolly making at several historic sites and events, and makes commissioned pieces. She’s a knowledgeable and patient teacher.
In the workshop you will learn several basic weaves to get the feel of working with the straw, then you can make a few different pieces. As you weave, hear about the history of corn dollies. By the end of the session you will have at least two or three finished corn dollies to take home. Decorations such as ribbons and charms will be provided for each piece.

Please wear sensible clothing and footwear for this workshop. Lunch is not included, although sandwiches (subject to availability), hot and cold drinks, and snacks are sold in our gift shop. You’re also welcome to bring a picnic if you prefer!
This workshop is intended for adults, but suitable for ages 16+. Participants under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Accompanying adults do not need workshop tickets themselves but are required to pay the site entrance fee.
