Ceramic Labyrinths

  • Butser Ancient Farm Chalton Lane Hampshire, PO8 0BG United Kingdom (map)

Labyrinths first appeared as symbols (rock carvings and paintings) in the Neolithic and Bronze Ages. During the Roman Empire, they became more elaborate and were used in floor decorations and as small, finger labyrinths placed on walls. During the medieval period, labyrinths were used as a spiritual tool, sometimes found in churches. In modern times Labyrinths are often used as a tool for meditation and wellbeing.

Participants will choose a Labyrinth design, which will be transcribed into clay using hand building techniques. You will create a functional, relief finger labyrinth, which you can further personalise to your own unique design using various coloured slips. Your Labyrinth will be taken away for firing, where it will also be traditionally finished, before being posted to you. Please note: it may take up to 4 weeks in order to fire each piece twice to make them fully weatherproof before posting.

Chose either a morning or afternoon session which allows time to explore our unique site!

Tickets £75 including postage
