Make pottery in the style of prehistory! Discover the history of this truly ancient craft, and learn the techniques used by prehistoric potters to make your own clay pot.

Under the expert tutelage of Bill Crumbleholme, master potter and replica-maker, you’ll learn how to make your own pottery using ancient techniques — from enhancing the strength of the clay to decorating your pot in your choice of Stone Age, Bronze Age, Iron Age, or even Roman styles.

About the workshop

  • 10am - 3pm with a break for lunch

  • Learn to hand-build a clay pot using prehistoric techniques

  • Discover the history of pottery and draw inspiration from historical designs

  • Set in the unique surroundings of Butser Ancient Farm’s historic buildings

Please note this workshop does not include firing your pot.

All proceeds of this workshop go towards supporting the ongoing research and educational work of Butser Ancient Farm.

Included in your ticket

Entrance to the farm, a full day’s tuition and expertise, and all the tools and materials necessary to create your own clay pot in the style of Stone Age, Bronze Age, Iron Age, or Roman pottery.


This workshop is suitable for ages 16+.

This workshop does not involve firing your creation, but it will be perfectly useable air-dried! If you would like to use your pot to hold liquid, please contact your local pottery to enquire about hiring kiln space. Even if fired, your pot will not be food safe.

Please wear sensible clothing and footwear for this workshop. Lunch is not included, although sandwiches (subject to availability), hot and cold drinks, and snacks are sold in our gift shop. You’re also welcome to bring a picnic if you prefer!
