Setting up Warp Weighted Looms

  • Butser Ancient Farm Chalton Lane Hampshire, PO8 0BG United Kingdom (map)

Learn how to set up a warp weighted loom, a technology used throughout history, dating back to the Neolithic in Central Europe. The distinctive feature of this loom is the use of clay or stone weights to tension the warp threads. This method was the dominant weaving technology for 5 of the past 6 millennia, and is still in use in some remote parts of Scandinavia. Explore the structure of the loom and learn how to set one up using a tablet-woven header. Discover how to tie the weights, chain the warp, and weave the heddle. If there’s time, there may be a chance to try weaving.

This workshop can be paired with Warp Weighted Weaving workshop, during which you will learn to weave and develop your weaving techniques.

Stay on-site in one of our historic buildings for an additional fee.
