About the fire Festival

THINGS TO SEE

Experience spectacular entertainment, with live folk music, fire dancers, talks, and living history! Hear dark Norse folk with authentic Viking instruments, watch combat displays as Saxon and Viking warriors fight to the death, witness daring fire-spinning performances, and more. Plus see master craftsfolk at work with traditional skills, and explore encampments of reenactors bringing our ancient past to life!

things to do

Heaps of fun for adults and kids alike! Have a go at axe throwing and try on a warrior’s armour, or get some Norse warpaint and hear retellings of Viking tales in a roundhouse. Browse stands from small and local creators, join a drumming workshop, and get hands-on learning some ancient skills. Don’t forget to make a wish and tie it to the longship before it’s burned!

the burn

Gather at dusk to honour the end of summer with fire and flame as we burn a Viking longship. Watch the torchlit funeral procession, honouring a fallen warrior from the reenactment battles; see Saxon archers send flaming arrows to set the ship alight; and bask in the glow of the burn as the ship goes up in smoke!

Food & Drink

Feast on plenty of food and drink! Get your supper from a food stand — previous years have included barbeque, hog roast, and sweet and savoury crêpes — and enjoy hot and cold drinks from our shop, or alcohol and several varieties of local mead from the bar! Non-alcoholic, vegetarian, vegan, and gluten free options will all be available, and are taste-tested to be just as delicious.

what is Equinox Viking Boat Burn?

A Viking longship burns on fire at Equinox Viking Boat Burn

Butser Ancient Farm is a unique experimental archaeology site in Hampshire, and Equinox Viking Boat Burn is one of our biggest fundraising events of the year. We’re an independent not-for-profit, and we absolutely rely on the support we get through Equinox to allow us to continue our research and educational work in the coming year.

The equinoxes mark the only two times in the year that day and night are equal length, halfway between the longest and shortest days. Ancient peoples have been observing the equinoxes and solstices since the Stone Age — this is what monuments like Stonehenge pay tribute to!

We don’t know if the Vikings themselves celebrated the autumn equinox, but some modern Norse pagans celebrate Haustblot around this time. Our festival isn’t intended as either a historical recreation or a religious celebration; instead, we take inspiration from the Viking tradition of boat burns and ship burials to honour the end of summer with a spectacular festival of activities, performances, and fire! We encourage you to bring to it whatever meaning you would like — historical, spiritual, communal, or just a bit of fun! This festival welcomes all comers.
