CANCELLED Evening Talk: (Re)Constructing the Stone Age with Claire Walton and Gareth Chaffey

CANCELLED Evening Talk: (Re)Constructing the Stone Age: Building a Neolithic house with Claire Walton, Butser Ancient Farm and Gareth Chaffey, Wessex Archaeology.

Thursday 16th July 7pm – 8.30pm

£5

Over the winter we transformed our Stone Age area with the redevelopment of our large Neolithic House. Join Butser Archaeologist Claire Walton, and Wessex Archaeology Senior Project Manager Gareth Chaffey as they share the experiences and challenges of designing and constructing this building, and what we have learned from this process.

Butser’s Neolithic house is based on archaeological evidence from Wessex Archaeology’s work at Kingsmead Quarry, Horton, Berkshire. Kingsmead Quarry is one of the most important Neolithic sites in the country, containing significant evidence for occupation during this period. Horton 2, the structure that has been reconstructed at Butser Ancient Farm, is the largest of the four Neolithic houses found at the site. Throughout the building process, new theories, construction techniques, and designs were tested, in collaboration with the original excavation team from Wessex Archaeology, in order to improve understandings of the challenges and solutions faced by Neolithic builders.
