At Butser Ancient Farm, we’re looking for a creative Marketing Assistant to help tell our story, grow our brand, and share the incredible work happening across the Farm. This is a rare opportunity to shape the voice of a significant experimental archaeology site, where ancient worlds come alive through education, events, research, and unforgettable visitor experiences.
About Us
Butser Ancient Farm is a leading centre for experimental archaeology and education and a not-for-profit community interest company. In 2022, we celebrated our 50th anniversary and as a research site we are constantly developing and conducting ambitious new experiments and construction projects to bring the past to life.
Our timeline of ancient buildings covers the Stone Age, Bronze Age, Iron Age, Roman and Saxon periods and we work with an increasing number of partner organisations to interpret the latest archaeological discoveries and research and bring them to our audience of school groups and visitors.
We are a small team where everyone gets involved and has a proactive hands-on approach to the past and to inspiring future generations about archaeology.
The Role
As the Marketing Assistant, you’ll lead the day-to-day delivery of our marketing and communications activity across digital platforms, campaigns, and visitor communications while helping us think more strategically about how we grow our audiences and strengthen our local presence.
This is a hands-on, highly varied role for someone who loves creating content and is happy to roll up their sleeves to support the wider business - no two days are ever the same.
Key Responsibilities
You’ll create engaging, original content across our key digital platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Bluesky & Linkedin, which has a combined following of 50,000
Planning and publishing regular social content (minimum 3–5 posts per week)
Capturing and sharing stories from across the Farm
Promoting events, workshops, visitor experiences, archaeological research, and educational work
Identifying new opportunities to grow engagement and reach
You’ll manage our Butser Plus membership content and newsletters
You’ll manage and grow our YouTube channel using content captured by our videographer
You’ll help keep our website fresh and relevant by uploading & editing blogs, maintaining key pages and support with communications
You’ll develop a measurable marketing strategy that supports with the business’s wider goals
As our events programme continues to grow, we’re looking for someone who can help bring our events to life—supporting their planning, coordination, and delivery.
Who We’re Looking For
An excellent writer with strong storytelling instincts
Marketing Degree will be highly advantageous but not essential
Experience in using tools such as Canva & Photoshop
Confident creating content for multiple digital platforms
Organised and able to manage competing priorities
Enthusiastic about heritage, education, culture, or visitor attractions
A willingness to support in all areas of the business is essential – so an excellent team player!
Website design experience using tools such as Squarespace (or something similar)
Flexible with working times as occasional support in the evenings & weekends may be required
We’re a remote site in the countryside therefore having your own transport is essential
Package & Benefits
Salary: £27,000
Full time: Monday – Friday 09:00 – 17:00 (40 hours a week)
