We are an independent not-for-profit, and your visit directly supports our work in archaeology, education, and community. Thank you!

Opening Times

Summer (April - October): Open on weekends and bank holidays.*

Hampshire school holidays: Open every day (excluding Christmas holiday period)

Winter (November - March): Closed except for educational visits and special events

Our opening times are 10am - 4pm, with last admission at 2:30pm.

Most visits last between two and five hours.

We welcome group visits and school trips all year round.

*Please note the farm will be closed to general visitors on the 4th and 5th May for our Beltain Festival.

We’re two minutes off the A3 and are easily accessible from London, Portsmouth, and beyond. Get directions →

  • We are a two minute drive from the A3. Take the A3 between Petersfield and Portsmouth, and come off at the Clanfield exit. Follow the brown signs to Butser Ancient Farm, or directions to Chalton. The entrance to the farm is halfway down the hill on your right.

  • Take the train to Petersfield. Catch the Number 37 bus from Petersfield to Clanfield, and come off at the Hampshire Hog in Clanfield. We are a 10 minute walk down the hill from the Hampshire Hog. Please be aware that parts of this walk are on the road with no pavement.

    Please remember to check bus and train times before planning your journey! (Unfortunately buses don’t tend to run on a Sunday)

  • There’s always heaps to see and do at Butser, with hands-on activities for all ages running every admission day, free children’s trails, living history demonstrations, and more.   • When booking your tickets for day admission, we ask you to indicate when you’d like to enter the site; please try to arrive as close to this time as possible, but don’t worry too much if you’re going to be late — we understand!

    No matter what entrance time you’ve booked, you’re welcome to stay on site for as long as you’d like. Most visitors spend between two and five hours here. Please be aware we close at 4pm.

  • Your whole family is welcome for day admission, including your four-legged friends! To respect our other visitors, please keep your dogs on a leash and be sure to clean up after them.

    At our other events we can only welcome assistance dogs, so please check the information on the event to be sure!

  • Visitors aged 65 and over, students, and disabled visitors are eligible for our concession ticket. Registered carers are entitled to free or discounted entry.

    Children under 3 can always enter for free.

    Annual passholders can enter for free.

    Please note some of these discounts only apply for day admission, not other events.

  • If you’ve booked for day admission but can’t visit, we can rearrange your tickets for another time that suits you. Unfortunately we can’t reorganise tickets for other events.

    We’re not able to offer refunds on any of our tickets.

  • We serve light refreshments in our Visitor Centre, including hot and cold drinks, and sweet and savoury snacks.

    We also offer a selection of sandwiches and delicious cakes when we are open at weekends and school holidays.

    You’re also welcome to bring your own picnic if you prefer.

    Across the site you can find picnic benches, or if it’s wet you can cosy up on a bench by the fire in one of our historic buildings!
