Time Traveller Training!
Tuesday 30th July, 6th, 13th, 20th 27th August 11am – 3pm
On Tuesdays in the summer holidays join us to pick up some of the skills needed if you suddenly found yourself travelling thousands of years into the past! Each week pick up different skills and knowledge to fill in your time travel passport! All guided activities will run from 11am – 3pm. (please note all activities are offered by our skilled volunteers and may be subject to change)
Through our experiments and research at Butser we try to understand how ancient people lived, and develop the practical skills they would have used in day to day life. Our Stone Age dwellings, Iron Age roundhouses, Roman Villa and Saxon homes, are the perfect training ground for the inquisitive time wonderer to practice. Learn about what to wear, what to eat, how to make money and build a home and how to make ancient friends along the way!
Whilst we might not be able to teach you how to travel back in time*, as experimental archaeologists we think we’re pretty well placed to give you some of the skills you’d need if you suddenly found yourself thousands of years into the past… to blend in with a Roman Legion, make friends with a Stone Age hunter or compare clothes with an Iron Age farmer!
*if you do have any tips on how to travel back in time let us know!!
Each week has a different theme…
Tuesday 30th July – ‘Looking the part’
When travelling back in time you’ll want to ditch the jeans and jumpers! Discover how to blend in with past fashions, how ancient people made their clothes, and how to accessorise like a true ancient fashionista.
Tuesday 6th August – ‘Staying Alive’
Ancient people didn’t have many of the foods we take for granted today, or modern medicine to keep them well. Learn survival skills to keep you healthy on your journey back in time, from cooking and baking to Stone Age surgery and Iron Age herbal medicine!
Tuesday 13th August – ‘Making yourself at home’
Once you’re suitably clothed with a full stomach you’ll want to find somewhere to lay your weary head! Discover ancient ways of making a shelter or home, keeping it warm, waterproof, spic and span and the things you’d need to know to make it comfortable and clean.
Tuesday 20th August – ‘Earning your keep’
To truly become a part of ancient society you’d need to make yourself useful and earn your keep. Try your hand at some ancient crafts to impress your ancestors and maybe even learn some skills that could earn you payment on your travels!
Tuesday 27th August – ‘Making friends’
Time travel is more than just about survival – after such a long journey you’ll want to meet the locals, enjoy yourself and also avoid getting into trouble! We’ll teach you how to impress your new friends with your knowledge of Roman board games, prowess with Stone Age painting and gift of the gab in ancient languages.
