Volunteers are absolutely vital to the everyday running of the farm, and we are very grateful to our team of hardworking volunteers who help us with everything from site maintenance to event organisation and animal care. We are always looking for new volunteers to join the team, and we will give you the opportunity to choose the tasks that fit your interests.

We also welcome students on university placements, secondary school work experience students, and young people hoping to gain their Duke of Edinburgh awards.

You can choose from a range of volunteering opportunities that include:

Tell our story – love talking about the past

We will train you to talk to visitors about specific houses on the site and about specific periods. For example, you could learn about the Iron Age and our Little Woodbury Roundhouse and then tell visitors about it. We need volunteers who can work on weekends or during the school holidays.

Events – something different every day

Butser Ancient Farm has a calendar of large and small events throughout the year and we need volunteers to keep everything running smoothly. There are lots of different tasks, and we will match you with your preferred activity. We’ll need volunteers on different days throughout the year, usually for just one day.

Wednesday workouts

Join our regular Wednesday volunteer crew to help around the farm. The work will change each week but it will be physical and it will probably be outdoors. If you’ve ever wanted to work on a farm, this is your chance.

Special projects – learn a new skill

We need volunteers to help us with special projects. These will often be a chance for you to learn a new skill and use it at the farm. As these projects come up we will call for volunteers who are interested and can commit an agreed amount of time for the project.

If you are interested in joining the team, please contact volunteers@butserancientfarm.co.uk and we will get back to you.
